Shepherdsville, Kentucky - The Heart of Bullitt County

The City of Shepherdsville is in the heart of Bullitt County, where the very first residents were the Paleo Indians. They entered North America approximately 10,000 to 11,500 years ago. These people, whose ancestors can be traced back to Central Asia, were nomadic hunter-gatherers whose remains have been discovered near the area's mineral springs, aka the salt licks.

Shepherdsville’s Bullitt Lick supplied salt by pack train and flatboat to areas as far off as Illinois. Interestingly, the Bullitt Lick salt works was Kentucky's first industry and continued producing till around 1830, when the steamboat took over as the primary means of transportation and lessened the expense of salt.
The very first settlement and station in the area was on the Wilderness Road at the mouth of Floyds Fork River. Shepherdsville got its name from Adam Shepherd, a business man who purchased some land near the Falls of Salt River in 1793.
In 1836, the Parquet Springs mineral spa opened, supposedly containing medicinal properties. This became a hot spot and those who suffered ailments would visit Shepherdsville just to drink and bathe in the water. Now, there is a shopping complex in the heart of town that shares the same name as the spa.

Shepherdsville was home to Kentucky’s deadliest train wreck, which killed about fifty people in a two-train collision before Christmas in 1917, but it was also home to Charles E. Kurtsinger from November 16, 1906 to September 24, 1946. He is an American Hall of Fame jockey that won the Triple Crown in 1937 and was given the nickname ‘The Flying Dutchman.
The City of Shepherdsville today is far more modernized. It has rolling hills, forested lands, and a country atmosphere while providing city conveniences. This community has a colorful past, but despite its growth it still maintains a neighborly environment. Shepherdsville is a very comfortable place to call home.

This east-end community is snuggled between Brownsboro Road, Chenoweth Lane, Napanee Road and Chipewa Road. This pleasant city within a city was incorporated back in 1950 in Jefferson County. The merger between Louisville and Jefferson County did not affect the governing of this area.

Wyandotte Neighborhood - The Home of Churchill Downs

The Wyandotte Neighborhood, also called Oakdale, is a cozy little community on the south side of Louisville. It is bordered by Longfield Avenue to the north, Taylor Boulevard to the west, convenient interstate access to the south with I-264, and to the east by Southern Parkway.

Back around 1890, the city opened up Iroquois Park, and this created an overwhelming demand for suburban homes in the southern part of Louisville. During that time period the area was known as Oakdale and the Coleman-Bush company had begun selling lots and developing a subdivision. The popularity of the streetcar lines was a primary factor in the construction of several middle class communities, thus the birth of Oakdale.

Around 1904, Oakdale incorporated and embraced Central Avenue which is the home of the historical Churchill Downs, as part of the community. This in itself was probably one of the wisest moves the neighborhood ever made, as Kentucky in general receives much recognition because of its history of thoroughbred racing and the track. Central Avenue is the high-life of the area and hosts Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium, and also the Kentucky Derby Museum which opened in the spring of 1985.
The city of Louisville annexed Oakdale in 1916, along with other nearby cities like Highland Park. Oakdale, like many other areas fought for its independence from the city, but ultimately it still became a part of Louisville in 1922.
Around the year 1935, Wyandotte Park opened in western Oakdale. The park was given its name from the Native American people of the Wyandotte Nation that reside mainly in Oklahoma. There is no actual record of why, but in the 1970’s the entire neighborhood was officially renamed Wyandotte, though some residents still refer to it as Oakdale to this very day.
Still, Wyandotte is most known as the home of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby. To this day, millions of people visit yearly to watch elegant thoroughbred horses thunder down the historical track that put Kentucky’s name on the map.

The Belknap Neighborhood was recognized by Louisville Magazine as a lovable neighborhood in October 2010. It is located roughly 4 miles from downtown Louisville and is bound by Bardstown Road, Dundee Road, Douglass Boulevard and Newburg Road. In itself, it is not actually the Highlands Neighborhood, but is considered by some to be the heart of the Highlands. This community has a warm environment, and a very rich history.

Belknap is home to Bowman Field, which was Kentucky very first commercial airport and is the oldest continually operating airfield in North America. It was founded by Abram H. Bowman, in 1921, and the 465th Pursuit Squadron began operations there in 1922. In 1963, the James Bond Movie ‘Goldfinger’ was filmed there, as the base for Pussy Galore’s Flying Circus.

The original school from 1916 was on Sils Avenue and was named for William Richardson Belknap. The old school house still stands today. However, in 1934 it became Air Devils Inn, which is still around today and is the oldest bar in Louisville. ADI is conveniently located across from Bowman Field and was once a favorite place for pilots to frequent when not preparing to go on a flight.
Belknap has many styles and ages of homes. The different styles represent the time of development. There are homes from the Arts and Crafts Movement, American Foursquare, Antebellum, Bungalow and Dutch Colonial. This is a very diverse and eclectic neighborhood that is rated as one of the most walkable areas in Louisville. This community is a wonderful place to visit and an even better place to call home.

Woodlawn Park was originally a land grant to Col. Gray from the King of England; however the good Mr. Gray lost the land in a gambling debt, which ironically, opened the door for the area to become a thriving place of business. The true history of the land started in 1858, when Robert Aitcheson Alexander, a renowned American breeder of Thoroughbred horses purchased the land and opened the Woodlawn Race Track in 1859. Robert was known as a land buyer for the National Horse Racing Association.

The Woodlawn Race Course drew national attention with visitors coming from all across the nation. This track became a very popular attraction and was the very first of its kind in the state of Kentucky. The ground thundered with the sound of horses running the track until the civil war. Robert Alexander actually had Tiffany’s design a special vase as a trophy. A replica of that very vase is still used today as the winner trophy at the Preakness Stakes. The original vase was said to have been buried during the war for safety, but was later dug up and has been preserved.

The City of Woodlawn Park, though rich in horse racing history, became a private community in Eastern Jefferson County in 1955. It is conveniently snuggled in between Westport Road and Shelbyville Road with expressway access to all areas of Louisville. This is a wonderful neighborhood that has its own Police Chief, Mayor and City Council, which provides the residents with security and ensures the upkeep of the area. They have an open council meeting available to all citizens on the third Monday of each month to discuss community events and resolve any issues.

The Phoenix Hill Neighborhood

The Phoenix Hill neighborhood is an area of Louisville that has undergone a drastic evolution since it began in 1774. This area was initially known as Preston’s Enlargement, and was part of the land granted to Colonel William Preston. The city took charge of the community in 1827, and renamed it Uptown.
In 1846, the Cave Hill Cemetery was developed by Edmund Francis Lee on an area that was initially farmland in Phoenix Hill. Great care was taken in designing this beautiful place of eternal rest. As time passed, people became a bit more extravagant as profits increased in the growing city. The simple cemetery with the garden atmosphere started getting more monumental art and evolved into one of the historic landmarks Phoenix Hill is known for today.
Former Louisville Mayor Harvey Sloane decided a change was needed in 1977. The Mayor saw the potential of the area and obtained federal funding to revitalize Phoenix Hill. Thanks to the efforts started at that time, the neighborhood is a thriving community today. You will find the homes and apartment communities to be upscale and comfortable, while the nightclubs range from Irish Pubs to trendy clubs. There is also a variety of local businesses to supply your everyday needs, along with some unique boutiques and coffee houses.
The rise of Phoenix Hill from the ashes of the past is noted in the local historical record books. The transformation that occurred in the community truly justifies its name. The Phoenix Hill neighborhood doesn’t lack for entertainment or convenience. Living in this area you get the excitement of the Highlands, the convenience of downtown and expressway access all in one perfect little package.

Residents and visitors to the area find it filled with charming homes, restaurants, boutiques, department stores and malls. It is home to Eastern High School and the one of the country’s largest churches, the Southeast Christian Church. The land on which the present day Middletown occupies was originally owned by the Revolutionary War veteran Jacob Myers. In the year 1897, it was chartered as a city by Phillip Buckner and William Chambers after they acquired some land from Myers. The original Middletown was actually two and one half blocks long and two blocks wide. It extended from Madison Avenue to Holmes Street east to west and McAuthor and Adair Streets north to south. The initial town was one of the early trading centers for the rich farmlands that surrounded it. A number of general stores and lumber mills were present, along with a tannery, millinery shop, cigar factory comb factory, a tailor and a blacksmith.

Middletown was occupied by Confederate forces during the 1862 invasion of Kentucky. The year 1910 brought a rail line between Louisville and Shelbyville for commuting, and the area started to quickly evolve from rural community to suburban neighborhood. By 1934, enough of the residents had vehicles that the railway was discontinued.
In 2003, when Louisville combined with Jefferson County, Middletown became classified as part of Louisville. However, none of the incorporated places were affected by the change and still maintain their Middletown identity. Today’s Middletown is an active, evolving city that still holds some of it historical sites and homes. In itself, it’s a beautiful community that provides expressway access to all areas of the city. You’ll find Middletown to be a neighborhood of convenience with plenty of activity all year round.

The Mockingbird Valley Subdivision is a small community in a beautiful country enclave with a rural feel. The neighborhood is located directly east of Louisville along the Ohio River on river bluffs and rolling hills. The elite homes are mostly off road, obscured by the dense trees, or located across stone bridges hidden by traditionally-built walls from local stone and wood. Over one-third of the area is privately-owned, so it’s a very close-knit neighborhood.

Rock Hill was the first home built in the area back in 1840, and it still stands. The land around it was initially all farmland, but due to the serene beauty of the area, wealthy Louisville residents began building summer homes. Atilla and Carrie Gaulbert Cox built their vacation home in Mockingbird Valley in 1905. Subsequently, Cox’s Park was named after them. The year 1908 brought Annie and Stuart Duncan who built the first year-round residence of the area. Not long afterwards, their move was followed by the Jarvis addition in 1912. Suddenly a community was starting to evolve!

The Green Hills Neighborhood was built in 1924, followed shortly thereafter by the Overbrook in 1929. Mockingbird Valley was incorporated into its own city in 1940. The area's development slowed down a bit after that to preserve the indescribable beauty of the countryside. A final small subdivision was built in 2006 and dubbed Mockingbird Valley River Bluff. It contains only 15 lots on 54 acres. The Louisville Country Club, built is 1905 is also very close to the community.
Mockingbird Valley is the definition of elite and has the highest resident-earned income in the Louisville area. The neighborhood itself desires to be known as a historic preservation district and wishes for no further development. The community is a serene environment filled with lush plant life, large trees and the peaceful rolling sounds of the Ohio. One just cannot blame the home owners for wanting it to stay that way.

Portland - The Original Wharf Town

When you think of Portland in Louisville, what is the first thing to come to mind? Most people would probably think of shotgun style houses, but there is a lot more to this sub-city than those quaint little rectangular homes. For instance, did you know that Portland was the largest of the first six major settlements at the Falls of the Ohio River?

Portland was settled by General William Lytle, founder of Cincinnati Ohio in 1811. The Generals original plan was to sell the lots to settlers and finance his plan to build a canal around the Falls. He consulted with and authorized Joshua Barclay and Alexander Ralston to design the town and include a large wharf for trade. With the development of the steamboat, that docking area quickly spawned into a booming business, as it was located right beside the only block in the Ohio. Crews had to unload, move their freight by land, then reload to continue down the river. Thus, Portland’s Wharf was flourishing and several taverns, warehouses, and shipyards were built to keep up with the flow of river traffic.

The Squire Earich House is the oldest known wood framed house in Louisville and it was the very first building completed in Portland. The cities first magistrate, Squire Earick commissioned the home at 2308 Portland Avenue, which still stands today. The building was purchased in 2004 and is currently undergoing renovations to become the Portland Museum, which should be completed by 2018.
In 2006, Portland was named by First Lady Laura Bush to be a Preserve America Community. Any neighborhood designated through the program use the Preserve America logo and is eligible to apply for grants that will be administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior. This area is getting a makeover including the museum, an arts district, several historic building renovations, and the creation of several large parks along the Portland Waterfront. The Portland Wharf Park will eventually bear a resemblance to Louisville’s Waterfront Park and have its own Great Lawn just west of 9th Street.
Upon first glance, Portland may not seem like much to look at. However, when one realizes the amount of history it houses and all the renovations that are taking place it’s actually a very promising community. As Portland revitalizes its Wharf, historical landmarks, and opens the new attractions, it will give Louisville’s citizens a cause to remember why it was such a popular settlement in the beginning.

Jeffersontown, Kentucky - An Industrial Boomtown

Jeffersontown, Kentucky is a thriving community and prior to the consolidation of Louisville and Jefferson County in 2003, it was the largest city in Jefferson County outside of Louisville. Jeffersontown, also known as J-town, is home to the largest industrial area in Louisville, the Bluegrass Commerce Park. This industrial boom town takes in over 1,800 acres and houses over 850 businesses. It is highly likely that you know someone who works there, perhaps even yourself, as it is the third-largest city of employment in Kentucky with over 38,000 employees.
It is difficult to imagine that this booming community was a huge forest prior to 1770s. The only homesteaders at that time were deer, elk, wildcats, bears and wandering buffalo. It was an ideal hunting ground, but in 1790 settlers started traveling eastward from Louisville and came across these fertile lands. Seeing it as an ideal location to set up a settlement, in 1794 James Bruner did just that on 40 acres along a ridge, dubbing it Brunerstown. The city of Louisville’s Jefferson Court changed the name on May 3, 1797 to The Town of Jefferson, in honor of Vice-President Thomas Jefferson.
The community started growing and developed into a friendly village with dusty streets and stone sidewalks. Pioneer entrepreneurs started setting up shops and by the 1800’s a broken rock road called the Louisville and Taylorsville Pike replaced the dirt traveling paths. The year 1903 brought a depot by Southern Railroad deemed the Electric Railway which created a route from Louisville to Jeffersontown’s public square.
Taylorsville Road was widened in the 1950’s and the General Electric Appliance Park was opened, which brought a lot of new residents seeking work. Another decade later the interchange at I-64 and Hurstbourne Lane made downtown Louisville more easily accessible, and by 1972 the Bluegrass Commerce Park was constructed. That was followed shortly by residential developments of homes, apartments, stores and offices on what was once a 700 acre dairy farm.
It took over 200 years for Jeffersontown to evolve into its present condition, but now it is a community where businesses thrive and residents live comfortably. With multiple expressway access points it allows for convenient travel anywhere in Louisville and provides a variety of restaurants, shops, and employers. Overall, it’s a great place to call home and unlike the early settlers, current residents don’t have to worry about a bobcat running through their backyard.

The Evolution of Butchertown

Butchertown started construction in the 1820’s and lies just east of downtown Louisville. This simple community was once the home to the famed inventor Thomas Edison, who owned a shotgun house on Washington Street in 1866. Adam, Webster and Clay Streets are named for Whig Party members John Quincy Adams, Daniel Webster and Henry Clay. The front of the former Heigold house from the early 19th century has been preserved on Fulton Street and still displays a detailed sketch of the early Whig Party leaders. It also has the words ‘dedicated to the greatest man in history, George Washington ‘etched across its front.
Initially, Butchertown was not the friendly community it is now. During August of 1855, it was home to many Irish and German immigrants and the riots known as ‘Bloody Monday’ took place there. The area was also an ideal spot for butchers and stockyards, as waste products could be routed away from the downtown via the Beargrass Creek.
Don’t let yourself be deterred by the neighborhoods colorful past. Times have changed a great deal for Butchertown. The neighborhood was reborn in the 1990’s as a thriving community. Now many young professionals call this area home due to a large amount of revitalization that took place. The empty store fronts were converted into condominiums at Market and Campbell Streets and Waterfront Park expanded. The Certified Historic Redevelopment is working on an exciting project at 1205 E. Washington Street, where a building called The Pointe is being converted from a deteriorated warehouse into a mixed development structure.
Butchertown has become a friendly community that’s evolving for the better of its residents. The current borders are I-65, Main Street, I-71, Beargrass Creek and Mellwood Ave. The neighborhood is full of history and offers a welcoming home to families and small businesses. It offers an ideal location for those that want a home close to the heart of downtown, without actually living there. Not to mention, Butchertown provides residents easy access to the thriving world of art located on Mellwood and monthly excursions with the Frankfort Avenue Trolley Hop.

St. Matthews - A City Within a City

Welcome to St. Matthews, a city conveniently located 8 miles from downtown Louisville and described as one of the most desirable shopping areas in our fair city. Being the 20th largest city in Kentucky, you’ll find St. Matthews borders run from I-264 to the south and east, several subdivisions off Brownsboro Rd to the north and close to Cannons Lane to the west. However, St. Matthews had to struggle to truly acquire the borders we’re all familiar with today.

On March 22nd of 1950, St. Matthews was annexed from Louisville and became its own city, but Louisville only freed up three square blocks bounded by Westport Rd., Gilman Ave, Chenoweth Ln., and St. Matthews Ave. Over the next 4 years, the citizens and businesses fought hard for the right to have the title and borders they were entitled to. After repeated court battles, and miles of red tape, they finally succeeded.

During their battle for freedom, the city’s first City Hall was Mayor James Noland’s home on Kennison Ave., and many city offices were located in the former Post Office building on Willis Ave. and Breckenridge Ln. The Mayor's home was replaced in 1960 by a new building east of Thierman Ln., but it was a bit small to contain the officials that presided over St. Matthews’ growing economy. The year 1994 brought a new home to City Hall at the former Greathouse Elementary School building at 3940 Grandview, along with the police station.
It took a while, but St. Matthews was filled with determined people who wanted to be comfortable and secure in their own community. The neighborhoods and businesses that know their history are proud to call St. Matthews home, and welcome new residents to their growing city.

The Harrods Creek Neighborhood had a truly humble beginning. Throughout the years, it underwent a metamorphosis and became the prominent stretch of land it is today. The community became a designated part of Louisville in 2003, though it began much earlier. It is bordered by the Ohio River to the west and US 42 to the east. This beautiful neighborhood is comfortably nuzzled between the intersections of Wolf Pen Branch Road and River Road, which was originally the Louisville-Westport Pike.

This prominent Louisville neighborhood is named after James Harrod, who came to evaluate the rolling hills and plentiful rivers of Kentucky in 1774, along with 37 other men under the order of Lord Dunmore. Kentucky held part of the Promised Land that the British Crown had bestowed upon soldiers that served in the French and Indian War. This paved the way to the first pioneer settlement in our fair state which was established in June, 1774.

Harrods Creek was known as ‘Seminary Land’ at first, and most trade was done on the river. The area’s first stopping point along the river was Harrod’s Tavern, and it still exists today, we know it as Captain’s Quarters Bar and Restaurant. Of course the building has been renovated and modified from its original structure, but it remains part of Louisville’s history.
When we look at the prominent homes that now exist in the Harrods Creek area, it is good to remember its humble beginning. Next time you and your family take a drive down River Road, or dine at Captain’s Quarters, take a moment to remember the pioneers that initiated the prosperity the current residents now enjoy.

In Lagrange, you will find both modern and historical homes, along with plenty of nature and wildlife.
Lagrange does something that not many cities do. It pays homage to the elders of the area that have offered their time and effort to help preserve or improve the community. In 2007 The Living Treasures Program was launched by the Oldham Era and Oldham County Historical Society. This program recognizes people 70 years and older and records their oral histories and photographs making them available to the public at the Oldham County History Center so their contributions won’t be forgotten.

If you’re interested in genealogy, the J.C. Barnett Library and Archives offers a collection of documents, genealogical records, photographs, and a library of regional and local history materials. The library itself is a piece of history as it is a restored 1840s 'Kentucky Four Square' house.
There is an annual history camp for kids under 12, at the Oldham Country History Center. The History Center also offers the Archaeology Institute for High School Students in July, where your teenagers can investigate the Gatewood site in Trimble County.

Downtown Louisville - The Heartbeat of River City

Downtown Louisville is one of the oldest sections of the city of Louisville. The largest fort, Fort Nelson, was built in 1781 near 7th and Main streets. Since most of the early architecture was wood, little is visible today of the city’s beginnings, but Main, Market and Jefferson Streets are all original streets from the initial development of our gracious city.

As a budding city, being located on the river aided in the speed of downtown growth. The steamboat era ignited the Louisville and Portland Canal west of downtown and river trade was booming. This opened the door to manufacturing companies, banks, and eventually railways. As a matter of fact, The Lofts of Broadway was one of the largest manufacturing company buildings in the city. This is one of the many pieces of Louisville’s history that has been well preserved, and renovated into housing.
Today’s downtown area is a very happening and an active part of the city. Just a few of the highlights of the community are the Kentucky International Convention Center, Fourth Street Live and the KFC Yum! Center. There are several museums and activity centers within blocks, such as the Louisville Science Center and the Kentucky Center for the Arts. The downtown community is also home to the tallest buildings in Kentucky including the AEGON Center, National City Tower, PNC Plaza and the Humana Building.

Living in the downtown area provides convenience within a few footsteps and surrounds you with history. There is a multitude of housing options available that provide easy access to and from the area. Restaurants are plentiful, as is entertainment, and who doesn’t enjoy a walk by the riverfront. If Louisville’s heart was visible, it could be seen beating on the riverfront, because that’s where it all began.

Back in the early pioneer days, the local Indian tribes once camped, hunted and survived on and around this very land. The pioneers built a fort, which was the only structure visible where the city of Louisville now stands. Indian Hills was named because of the strong presence of the original tribal people.

In 1785, Irish-born John Veech arrived at the Falls of Ohio as a surveyor, and purchased the 502 acre tract of land rich in Bluegrass, Orchard Grass and freshwater springs that eventually became Indian Hills. In 1806, he built a cabin, followed by a plantation house in the Georgian style for his family. This was the beginning of the Indian Hill Stock Farm, which was owned and operated by the Veech family for 118 years and through six generations. The Veech family raised trotting horses and became the second largest producer of these distinguished animals in Kentucky.
In 1924, 300 acres was sold to a subdivision development syndicate, along with 200 acres to the Louisville Country Club. The area development was planned by Frederick Law Olmsted’s Landscape Architectural Firm. Many of the features in the development earned him both fame and the title of ‘Father of Landscape Architecture’.
This area is now the Indian Hills Community, and every effort was made to conserve the natural formation of the hills and the beauty of this land. The curvy roads were designed to flow with the landscape and preserve the romantic atmosphere and beauty that is clearly visible today.

Crescent Hill - A Little History, A Lot of Convenience

The Crescent Hill community was developed back in the 1850’s, but initially was known as Beargrass, because it is nestled between two forks of Beargrass Creek. It is conveniently located just four miles from downtown Louisville, so it makes for easy access to the thriving downtown area.
In Crescent Hill’s beginning back in the 1850’s, the Louisville and Frankfort Railroad was actually built and actively ran through the existing neighborhood. The area was booming with advancement and improvements. In 1853, Crescent Hill housed a 38 acre fairground that hosted the Agriculture and Technology Fair receiving up to 20,000 visitors. However, around the year 1883, the fairgrounds were dismantled to make room for the <a title='St. Joseph's Orphanage in Crescent Hill' href='http://www.sjkids.org/'>St. Joseph’s Orphanage.

The City of Louisville took possession of Crescent Hill in the late 19th century and the 1970’s brought the Crescent Hill Community Council. The Council is housed in the Historical Peterson Dumesnil House located at 301 South Peterson. The beautiful Italian Villa style house was built after the civil war around 1869 and designed by the renowned local architect Henry Whitestone. This preserved property still stands today, and is one of the most-desirable and historic Homes in Crescent Hill. The council rents the property out for grand events, like weddings.

Crescent Hill is convenient to both downtown and the east end of Louisville. The area offers a variety of homes including historic, retro and modern designs, along with several apartment communities. The Frankfort Ave. and Lexington Rd. areas have an abundance of unique shops, restaurants, and coffee houses, so easy access to entertainment is right around the corner. All in all, Crescent Hill is an ideal location for anyone who requires convenient travel routes and activities.

Camp Taylor - A Louisville Military Training Camp

As people drive through the suburb known as Camp Taylor, it seems like an average neighborhood with Cape cod homes and picket fences. However, Camp Zachary Taylor is one of the many areas in Louisville that has a unique history.
Camp Zachary Taylor started as farmland, but was constructed into a Louisville military training camp in 1917, that closed in 1921. The name Camp Taylor was bestowed in honor of Louisville resident and former US President Zachary Taylor. Its purpose was to train and prepare our US soldiers that were to serve in World War I, and it housed at one point 47,500 men. That made it was one of the largest military camps in the United States. There were 2,090 buildings, including 114 officers' quarters, 399 enlisted men's barracks, a military hospital, and 284 stables.
Several famous individuals who served in the US military during WWI visited or were housed in Camp Taylor, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, the novelist. If you’ve ever read his novel The Great Gatsby, there is mention of Louisville’s Camp Taylor.
Some of the original buildings still stand, but were converted into homes or businesses in the 20’s and 30’s. If you see a house with standing chimneys at either end, more than likely it was once a military building. There have been many new homes built since the Camp Taylor Neighborhood originated, so the area has a more modern look including a park and public pool. However, if you know what to look for, you can still see the unique history of the area.

The Old Louisville Neighborhood
Today, Old Louisville has a very diverse population, but was once home to the city’s wealthiest residents. During the 1880’s, the Oak Street and Hill Street area was one of Louisville’s most fashionable neighborhoods, and the neighborhood had 260 homes that valued at a total of $1.6 million. With modern technology and the ability for wealthy business owners to drive to their offices, many of the residents moved out of Old Louisville into the suburbs. This led to many of the stately mansions being converted into apartments or multi-family homes. The community would once again see revitalization during the 1960’s when Courier-Journal writer J. Douglass Nunn organized “Restoration, Inc.,” and compared the neighborhood to Georgetown in Washington D.C. and Beacon Hill in Boston. Home values in the area doubled between 1990 and 2000 at a rate faster than the city as a whole.
The influx of new local restaurants and bars that have moved into Old Louisville in recent years has appealed to many young professionals and culturally-diverse home buyers. Prices for an Old Louisville Home can range from $75,000 for a condominium to over $750,000 for an exquisite mansion. There are many different home styles in Old Louisville, including Federal, Queen Anne, Antebellum, Richardsonian, American Craftsman, and the most prevalent – Victorian.

The community hosts many events throughout the year, including the St. James Court Art Show that takes place in October in one of the most beautiful and well-known locations in Old Louisville – St. James Court. The art fair attracts nearly 300,000 visitors and features over 700 artists, making it one of the largest neighborhood art fairs in the country. The Victorian Ghost Walk is also an October event, when the neighborhood dresses in period costumes and guided tours are conducted with ghost stories and true tales of hauntings in what some have called “America’s most haunted neighborhood.” History and architecture enthusiasts will love the Holiday House Tour in Old Louisville. Several homes open their doors to visitors for tours of holiday decorations and festive décor of bygone years.
An architectural beauty, Old Louisville is a treasured neighborhood with a lot of charm, friendly residents, and activities for everyone. Learn more about neighborhoods and events in the area by visiting Louisville Real Estate.

St. Matthews, Kentucky is one of the most-popular destinations for residents in the entire state. While located convenient to shopping, entertainment, and dining, St. Matthews also boasts of another great trait - it's incredible collection of Cape Cod Homes.

Learn About the St. Matthews Community
The St. Matthews area of Louisville, Kentucky is a beautiful community full of greenery and lovingly-kept homes. This neighborhood saw extensive growth after the Ohio River Flood of 1937, when residents of low-lying areas in Louisville moved into St. Matthews homes because of the higher terrain. The city was incorporated in 1950 and quickly became a shopping epicenter for Louisville as the first indoor shopping mall in the city opened around the same time on Shelbyville Road. Today, St. Matthews features tons of shopping and restaurant choices, and is still known as the place to be for shopping in Louisville.
The best way to experience St. Matthews is to take a drive or stroll through the area, especially during the fall season. The fall colors are beautiful and give the city even more charm and character. There are plenty of walking trails, bicycle lanes, and sporting opportunities. Seneca Park is located in the area and is even within walking distance from some St. Matthews Homes. The park has ballfields, basketball courts, horseback riding trails, biking, and numerous other outdoor activities to enjoy. There is even an 18-hole golf course that is ranked the sixth-toughest course in the state. The Seneca Golf Course has been voted 'Best of Louisville' for several years and is one of the most heavily used courses in the city.
Cape Cod Homes in St. Matthews
St. Matthews is charming and quaint, and homeowners are known for taking great pride in their homes and yards. Buyers can get into the area for as low as $130,000 to well over $1,000,000 for the most exquisite of residences. There are many different styles of homes, but the most prevalent is the Cape Cod. Because St. Matthews is such a desirable location, homes typically do not stay on the market for very long, especially the well-known Cape Cod.

Cape Cod-style homes are some of the country's oldest and most popular. They can best be described as small in scale, generally a story and a half high. Cape Cods have a roof pitched at 8' to 12' to keep harsh weather at bay and a small roof overhang to keep strong winds from doing extensive damage by lifting the roof. These homes were inspired by the inhospitable weather of Massachusetts' Cape Cod region and were meant to withstand the toughest of Nor'easters. Typically having very little ornamentation and a simple design, modern Cape Cod homes still draw heavily from the old colonial architecture.
It is no wonder this lovely community is a residential hotspot with its many parks and shopping options and the beautiful, quaint Cape Cod homes that line the wide, tree-lined streets of St. Matthews. To learn more about the area, please visit Louisville Real Estate.

Is Lake Forest Louisville, Kentucky's Best Subdivision?

As a real estate agent in Louisville, Kentucky I am frequently asked - which is the best Louisville subdivision? In my experience and through objective analysis, I think that you can make a strong case to say that Lake Forest is Louisville's best subdivision. Without a doubt, the Louisville area features many excellent places to live, neighborhoods that cater to a wide-variety of lifestyles, plus subdivisions that showcase homes of all sorts. To determine the best subdivision in Louisville is quite challenging, but in the end we will have enough information to make an informed decision.

Let's review criteria that will help us to determine if Lake Forest is indeed Louisville's best subdivision. First, the subdivision needs to have enough homes in it to cater to a highly-diverse group of residents. Lake Forest has over 1,500 homes within its bounds, so residents do have a large selection of homes from which to choose. Next, the best subdivision will need to have sufficient amenities to provide entertainment and a sense of community to its residents. Lake Forest has several swimming pools, a very nice clubhouse, tennis courts, walking trails, plus a championship 18-hole golf course, all allowing residents ample opportunity to come together as neighbors and enjoy the community.

In addition, the subdivision determined to be the best in Louisville will have homes that are consistently priced, hold their value over time, and that are highly-desirable to their potential home buyers. Homes in Lake Forest are among the most well-constructed, well-designed homes in the entire Louisville area. Prices have held steady in general despite the economic downturn displaying evidence that Lake Forest is weathering the storm well and that the neighborhood has staying power in the real estate market.
Other factors to be considered when determining the best subdivision in Louisville are the days on the market for listings, the average price reductions for sales, plus the number of active listings and sold homes over the previous 12 months. Lake Forest homes typically sell in less time on average than other homes in Louisville, they sell at prices close to the asking price, and the number of active listings in the area coincides with a subdivision as large as Lake Forest. In other words, Lake Forest remains a consistently good buy for area residents.
Without a doubt, it is hard to determine which neighborhood would be consider the best subdivision in Louisville due to the diverse nature of people's lifestyles, plus their wants, needs, and desires with a home. However, when considering all of the factual information available, in my opinion Lake Forest is the best subdivision in Louisville, Kentucky.

With a growing population, bars and unique restaurants continue to spring up in Germantown. Many of the bars, such as Flabby’s Schnitzelburg and Lisa's Oak Street Lounge, predominantly cater to the long-time residents. If you’re looking for a more laid-back, dynamic environment, T. Eddie’s and Nachbar are two common hangouts for college students and business professionals.

Crescent Hill Neighborhood Louisville, KY

The Crescent Hill Neighborhood bubbles with creativity and tradition, reflecting its Frankfort Avenue shopping and dining district -- and its walkable neighborhoods.
The Crescent Hill area of Louisville is formally bounded by Brownsboro Road on the north, Lexington Road on the south, Ewing Avenue on the west, and Cannons Lane/Fenley Avenue on the east. Frankfort Avenue cuts through the middle.
Mention “Crescent Hill” to most Louisvillians and they’ll think of Frankfort Avenue shops, the large and distinctive Louisville Water Company filtration plant and reservoir, and the frequent trains that run parallel to Frankfort Ave.
They may also think of the Frankfort Avenue Trolley Hop, where, on the last Friday of the month, Frankfort Avenue adopts a party atmosphere with late shopping and dining hours and free trolley rides for visitors’ convenience.
Crescent Hill is also home to a few religious institutions. The St. Joseph’s Children’s Home is a 160-year old organization still offering services for children on its park-like campus on Frankfort Avenue. Every summer the home hosts a large and extremely popular fundraising festival on its grounds.
On the eastern side of Crescent Hill is the Ursuline Motherhouse and campus. It is also home to the highly regarded Sacred Heart Academy and Sacred Heart Model School, a child development center and a Montessori program. The nuns used to run a college at this campus but it merged in the late 1960s with then-Bellarmine College.
Further west along Lexington Road is the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, also on a park-like campus. The Seminary has been growing – in recent years it has purchased land along Grinstead Drive and built housing for its students.
Other Crescent Hill landmarks include the Crescent Hill Baptist Church, the Peterson-Dumesnil House, the Crescent Hill Library and the many well-known businesses on Frankfort Avenue between Stilz and Ewing Avenues, such as Margaret’s Consignments, Carmichael’s Bookstore and Blue Dog Bakery.
